Top Tips for your April Gardens

Top Tips for your April Gardens

Spring is finally here and there’s lots to do in the garden this month. Here are our top tips for your April garden ??

Feed hungry shrubs and roses by adding a good mulch of well-rotted manure or top quality multi-purpose compost. This will encourage healthy, new growth and an impressive display of blooms.

Sow lawn seed and repair bare patches. TOP TIP for every handful of grass seed, mix with a handful of topsoil; this should disguise the grass seed from the birds and prevent them from feasting on it!

Sow herbs, hardy annuals and wild flower seeds outdoors now.

Keep weeds under control. I would personally avoid using chemical weed sprays and do a hand weed in the spring. Weeds should be young and easy to remove from beds and borders. Once this has been done, apply a weed membrane and apply a good mulch such as bark nuggets or slate – we have a huge range of bark, slate and aggregates here at Singletons Nurseries.

Increase watering of houseplants gradually.

Tie rambling and climbing roses and tie new shoots of clematis and honeysuckle to help support the new growth and keep the plants neat against the trellis, arch or obelisk.

Lift and divide perennials. Lift herbaceous perennials such as Hostas and Crocosmia now and divide. This will not only give you more plants but give them more room to grow and establish in to healthier plants.

Prune penstemons now. Penstemons are a woody perennial and need pruning back hard to reduce woody stems and encourage healthy, new growth.

Prune Forsythia as soon as it has finished flowering.

Apply a layer of mulch such as a well-rotted manure around your borders before the warmer weather arrives.

Feed fruit trees and raspberry canes with a well-rotted manure or a good garden compost.

Lay new turf and keep moist until well established. We sell a premium turf here at Singletons, freshly cut each morning to fulfill your orders. For further details or to place an order, please view our turf online here or call us on 0121 457 9977.
