1. Plant soft fruit
- Plant soft fruit plants in ground that has been enriched with well-rotted manure or compost or in large-ish pots filled with a good all-purpose compost. We have a range of the best compost varieties for gardens and containers in the nursery right now.
- In store we have we have Blackberries, Blueberries, Gooseberries, Black currants, Tayberries, Loganberries, Raspberries and Rhubarb! So, if you love fresh fruit… grow your own, why not give it a go yourself, it really is surprisingly easy to do.
2. Plant Fresh Season Roses
- Whether it’s a climbing or a rambling rose, a Hybrid Tea, Floribunda or Patio Rose, now is the very best time to plant them. The ground is warm so the roots can grow. I always recommend planting them with mycorrhizal fungi, we sell Empathy Rootgrow. The fungi attaches itself to the roots of the rose and stimulates much stronger root growth for longer lasting, better performing roses. It also helps the soil recover if your planting a rose where one use to be. Mycorrhizal fungi can be used when planting most plants.
3. Feed The birds
- It’s so rewarding to feed the garden birds and now is the time to start to regularly feed them, as temperatures start to fall. Visit our in-store garden bird food and care section for ideas.
4. General
- November is your last chance to prepare your soil before winter sets in. Soil can easily be damaged so make sure you dig up any unwanted plants and turn over your soil while it still contains some summer heat.
- Keep your leaves! They really are a commodity in any garden, perfect for adding to both mulch and compost. Let it rot down in a quiet corner of the garden, to use next year in your beds and borders.
- If you’re keen to keep wildlife in your garden this winter, there are plenty of things you can do to encourage insects, birds and other creatures to roam around. Create log piles, and look at ways to make nooks and wild areas where wildlife can be safe.

Continue to Plant spring-flowering bulbs
Choose from our selection in the nurseries glasshouse. As temperatures start to fall (but before frosts are realistically possible) Autumn is the time to plant spring-flowering bulbs, such as Daffodils, Crocus and Tulips.
